Football fans put minimum petition to over 19,000 signatures

August 3, 2007

Yesterday’s BC Lions game, may not have resulted in a win on the field for Lions fans, but football fans helped lift the B.C. Fed’s $10 now minimum wage petition to over 19,000 signatures.

Twenty volunteers including B.C. Fed vice-president Michelle Laurie, also president of Local 258 of the IBEW, and Surrey Newton MLA Harry Bains, collected over 1200 signatures from football fans attending yesterday’s game at BC Place.

The campaign continues to grow with more activities planned for this year.  Most game goers approached yesterday were happy and enthusiastic to sign, with only a few naysayers, paralleling polling by the Federation that has shown 79 percent of British Columbians support increasing the minimum wage to $10.

Similarly 23 municipal councils across BC have also supported the $10 now call, and hopefully the issue will earn the support of delegated to the Union of BC Municipalities convention this fall.
